Inspired by his immediate environment for subject matter, Peter draws heavily on the extraordinary landscapes that surround his National Park galleries. However, as a seasoned traveller, his sources may just as likely have international origins. Peter's paintings continue the long tradition of artists in their creative ambition to capture nature's dramatic forms, gentle reflections and quixotic light. This constant endeavour is also applied to bold cityscapes and sensuous figures that feature frequently in his repertoire. Working in oil on canvas Peter has developed a vibrant, contemporary style that pays homage to past masters such as Turner, and those of the impressionist movement, but uses a pallet of colours that is definitely of the 21st century. Spanning the two camps of realism and abstraction, surface texture combines with an energy and fluidity of execution. The radiant qualities of these paintings pull on the emotions, evoking feelings of awe and enchantment. |

The 25th Sptember 2008 saw the official opening of Peter Hill gallery in Sheffield. It seems a long time ago since the building work started, but we are now pleased to say that the gallery is finished, and open for business! The opening event was given an added touch of excitement with the arrival of Ric Savage, the bass guitarist from the Sheffield band Def Lepard, who took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony during the evening. The evening also saw the opening of 'Impressions of China', a collection of paintings by Peter, following his recent visit to China. His new work, together with a collection of other new landscapes of Derbyshire, can be seen at Peter Hill Gallery, 742, Ecclesall Road, Sheffield S11 8TB.
